According to Hitwise data, search engine users are using long words as part of their search queries. The report gives the percentage of long tail keyword usages in US. The figures show a steep fall in one word keywords over longer keywords.

I think this shows that your average search user is becoming smarter and more choosy with their searches. With experience, they know that shorter term searches aren't exactly going to return the results they are looking for and they're adding more to their search terms in order to return results that give them what they want.
