Has the PageRank Algo been changed by Google engineers? It used to be "links" was your way to the green stuff shown in the Google Toolbar. Rumor has it (I agree after testing the theory) people flocking to a site cause increased pagerank...quickly. Some SEO gurus are calling it IR (Influence Rank) http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/013628.html

It's an interesting thought! There have been cases where I could not attribute PR going up and this could be it, however looking at a lot of the posts, I would have to agree with some of them that state that this would be way to easy to manipulate by spam farms with multiple IPs. Google definitely tracks from a quality perspective, but if they are truly utilizing this this to influence PR, then this poses many potential challenges...

Page Rank calculation consists of many metrics and back links plays important role in that. Visits from search engines and their stay in site may influence page rank.

Quotes from Google:

"PageRank Technology: PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms."

I actually tested this theory in June with a site I was working on. It was a Google Analytics Wireframe I made for the public to use. I was lucky to catch Avinash Kaushik's eye on Twitter. He Tweeted it. Within 2 weeks this brand new webpage was PR 5. To date this page holds PR http://www.galearning.com/ga_learning/g ... ce/map.htm from the tweet.
