This is not something unusual. ALL other web analytics programs have an opt out. Google is doing this to ensure that comply with federal guidelines for government web sites by offering one.

There were opt out plugins (or javascript and cookie disabling) already available for the data Nazis out there. As we internet savvy people know, there is no such thing as privacy since ISP's have ALL your browsing data and provide it to to report on this. Using a Google Analytics opt out to try and protect yourself from privacy issues is silly and results from a lack of understanding.

I just wonder how accessible the opt out will be and whether there will be widespread use.

It will be GREAT for us SEM's to ensure that we aren't tainting customer data.
