I agree with you, the social signals that a website/webpage receives have impact on the ranks. More the signals (more shares, tweets, pins etc) more the trust from Google. This is clear from their latest PR updates, they had given good page rank to the web pages that were shared a lot on the social media like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and etc. Since penguin 1.0, Google started to use the social signals too as one of the ranking factor out of many other factors.
