Google, Yahoo and MSN are all commercial enterprises with profit motive being high on their agenda. I do not think they receive any donations or grants like Wikipedia. As I see it, the article vaguely suggests that Yahoo & MSN use subtle ways to promote sites that subscribe to their paid ad campaigns. As far as Google is concerned, their organic search is detached from their paid search and so there is little room for suspicion.
