Does Domain Forwarding Help SEO

Postby DJ » Wed Nov 26, 2008 4:17 am

I was just wondering if anyone has any knowledge or experience pertaining to domain forwarding to another URL.

If I owned a domain http://www.widgets.com - do any of you know if I registered domains like http://www.widgetmakers.com , http://www.widgetsales.com , widgetmarketing.com etc and fwded them to http://www.widgets.com if that would help with the results in the Organic rankings?

One of the most prominent blogger on social networks & social phenomenon was talking about how unprepared big companies are about bad image on the web. The topic veered to how many companies have actually made sure they have picked up domains that a bad reviewer could exploit. If the company has a website like http://www.example.com the best way to make the bad reviews or your carping count is to register with a domain like http://www.examplesucks.com or http://www.exampleripoff.com or http://www.examplecheats.com, you'll find that most prominent websites if they had thought of this weakness would have insured they would have picked up those bad domains earlier.

Now to answer the question above? i believe this was discussed as strategy in SMX this year the premise being Matt cutts very explicit disclosure that domains will carry weight for sometime to come.

This is what they seemed to have come up from the camp someone sumarrized this in a forum

"For what it's worth, I attended a BarCamp this weekend, and the final and most-attended talk was on SEO optimization with Google. I don't have time to break it all down and make it pretty, but I'll repost here the entirety of the notes I took at the talk. I think they're mostly self-explanatory. I can't personally vouch for any of the techniques he talked about, but the guy giving the talk works for a prominent SEO firm, so I assume it works.

Google loves keyword centric domains
Yahoo and Live love them even more

User experience trumps keyword madness

Keep branded domain, use it in ad campaigns, buy all keyword centric domains and do 301 redirect

Research your target keyword phrases (AdWords, etc.) (2-4 word phrase)

Buy domains (even with dashes --> easier for search engine to read and for person to read)

Create vertical micro-sites
focus on the keywords in the domain
reuse / rewrite content
contribute frequently (build on something like WordPress)
build links and test with PPC as a landing page
link liberally to main parent domain

Own competitors' traffic
Register a keyword centric domain that includes the words reviews
create a review website (WordPress and a good theme)
Only write about your competitors
