Here is a list of tips to consider before submitting your website to directories:
*Choose the Right List and Category:
Choose the right list of directories and the right category for submission. Quantity of links is not the only factor search engines look for quality and relevancy of backlinks are also very important. It’s not always necessary to submit your website to high page rank sites, choose the directory that has relevant category and if they have a good Page Rank it's just an additional bonus. Most of the submissions get rejected as they are submitted to the wrong categories, always take a good look at the categories and the sites listed under them.
*Look out for baned Sites:
There are some directory sites that has been penalised by google, when you find a directory search for the them in google if it doesn't show up then either they are sites under development or banned sites, submission to these sites may affect your PR so keep away from these sites.
*Don't over Optimize your Title & Description:
Don’t use over promotional words like "Price", "The Best", "Offers" etc. Title and description is the reflection of your site so keep it simple, clear and use your Keywords wisely. Don’t use the company name in the title and Keep the character limit to maximum of 30-40 words. It’s not necessary to put capital letters in front of every word, use cap’s only if needed. Use of different anchor texts for submission as directories are a source of permanent linking.
*Use The Right Format For Submission:
Some directory sites accept url's in the format http://www.example.com whereas others accept them in the format http://www.example.com & http://www.example.com/ i.e followed by a " / ", So read the rules and regulations carefully before submission.
If your submissions are approved by the relevant directories and if you still find that Google is not listing them , don't worry Google does not list all your backlinks they list only the directories that has a PR of 4 and above. The Yahoo site explorer or the backlink watch will give you a good idea on the amount of links that your site has gained overtime.
Approval of your site may take about 2 days to 2 months, and if it's still not approved try resubmitting it as there is a chance that your submission may have expired.
