Social Media Optimization (SMO)

Postby cyriac » Wed Jun 18, 2008 11:35 pm

Social media optimization is a means to generate online publicity through various social media and online communities.

SMO is a way of getting socially connected. And, a few of the well known methods of getting so connected are – RSS feeds, subscribing to social media networks like Facebook, Digg, Furl, linkedin, del.icio.us stumbleupon etc.

There are also the 3rd party community methods including the photography communities like – Flickr, through which we can add photo events and publish them as and when required. And, obviously tagging is a very important source of information here. Tags can be used to promote the keywords through which we can search for information on social media networks or media communities like Flickr.

Social media optimization is in many ways connected as a technique to viral marketing where word of mouth is created not through friends or family but through the use of networking in social bookmarking, video and photo sharing websites.
You can even share information through blogosphere. A great deal of blog information is also available on sites like Technorati or in a bookmarking web service like del.icio.us

Social Media Optimization is all about involving certain social media activities that would generate traffic and drive visitors to particular website. It is needless to say that a website without traffic is of no worth. Activities such as blogging, creating and submitting business pages, tweeting and re-tweeting, article and press release submission to directories, video promotions and other such activities help a website go up in search engine ranking, as well as create the right traffic within the site. Thus, Social Media Optimization is all about getting high linkability and visibility through social networking sites and forums. :)

In a world of co-creation, it pays to be more open about letting others use your content (within reason). YouTube's idea of providing code to cut and paste so you can imbed videos from their site has fueled their growth. Syndicating your content through RSS also makes it easy for others to create mashups that can drive traffic or augment your content.

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is a form of social media marketing that is geared towards building online traffic to a website resulting from social media sources such as video sharing sites, podcasts, blogs, social networking sites and other online communities. The idea is to structure a website so that it increases its linkability, makes tagging and bookmarking easy, is highly visible in social media sites, rewards inbound links and encourages other social media channels such as blogs to spread the content. In addition the making the website more SMO friendly, companies need to participate actively in social networking sites, target the proper audience and create content that naturally spreads. SMO differs from search engine optimization (SEO) which is focused on delivering traffic from search engine rankings, but definitely complements it as an ideal online marketing strategy. Like SEO, SMO attracts customers, builds brand awareness and establishes customer trust.
