Suppose you have published a video and would like to measure:
* the geographic distribution of your viewers
* how many seconds visitors watch each video
* visitor drop-off rate
* number of unique viewers
* number of new viewers
* number of total video plays

How would you do that?

Well there are many ways either we use custom events in Google Analytics and figure it out. The GA API is really good for all this.

You can also purchase a solution from providers like Brightcove.

I have posted a link to the article "Brightcove Teams Up With TubeMogul To Power Its Analytics", check it out -

This is something we can develop ourselves.

Google Analytics does not automatically measure this.
They have an API which we can use and this will let us track every event such as a click on the play, stop, pause, download. But this has to be coded for each video.
I think it's pretty simple if you have swf files. Video hosting sites have their own system I guess. They host the videos and pull all this data into their site so you have a look at all the stats.
