The global market shares of search engines for the month November. As expected Google climbed a rung up the leadership ladder while others are down few rungs. Amusing to think what will happen next!

Wow.
Have you seen ?
They never got off to a good start, and never recovered from the negative publicity, it seems.
That's just an amazing collapse.

Yes proved not so cool after all. As you said they faltered at the start itself and then went their way downhill. Server crashes, inaccurate search results and accusations that the . The "Google-killer" is now gasping in gloom.

Its almost impossible with every passing year for any new start up to challenge Google supremacy that's what most Information Retrieval scientist believe. Search behind the hood require complex engineering and infrastructure. Most search engine companies cant afford that kind of setup that google has. You need data centers that can handle all the information that's being constantly pumped out.
Then you need the brains, Google provides a conducive environment for nerds and geeks. A former google employee like in the case of cuil can start a search engine with a bunch of talented people but could you ever beat the sheer synergy being produced by 1ooo or so geeks working in tandem.
the only search engine that can attack google bastion now is Microsoft. And Bill gates has suspended his retirement and is marshaling the troops for his final coup. Once Yahoo has a CEO Microsoft is going to pick up Yahoo in the first quarter of the next year. They have already got half the Yahoo search team to join them already.
But I believe google will keeping beating shit out of all these guys because they continue to play by search rules that are Googles. Microsoft has come out with Xrank an toolbar. Search needs a paradigm shift to close the relevance gap and beat Google.
