To be honest, I noticed it and don't really like it. Once text and fields start getting over a certain size on a web page, they start to look bad, in my opinion.
If people need to see text on a page better, they can increase their screen resolutions or increase the size percentage in their browser window (some have this plug in or add-on built in).
I don't know why Google thinks this is better.

How does making something like a search field bigger make it more "fun"?

Ummm, correct me if I'm wrong, but pretty much the
only purpose of the Google home page is to search. This isn't Yahoo or MSN we're talking about-it's not a portal to multiple services and information pages.
The blog post sounds more like a sales pitch to me than anything.
