This is actually very interesting to see. When I was in school a classmate failed the usability course developing a site the same way.
The Teachers argument was there was too much happening on the screen and the user wouldn't understand how they got to where they are. Since the person isn't intentionally navigating the site, it was less likely they could repeat their actions.
Sometimes innovation actually ruins the user experience.
